AutoDesk -- makers of 2D and 3D computer design software -- recently concluded and posted the results of a survey called "Design for Living". The survey was done between March 23rd and March 28th -- mainly through email and online forms -- of adults 18 and above (with a +/-2.2% margin of error). The survey wished to find out how important "design" (in the very broad sense of the word) affects and influences our daily lives. The results are fascinating.

  • 58% of people said they would be happier if there office environment was beautifully designed; 55% said they'd be more motivated.
  • 76% of Americans believe that design is becoming more innovative every year (meaning, people notice and value when products, services, or items change and improve their design)
  • 66% of Americans (age 18-29) believe that beautifully designed public spaces are a factor in decided where to live.
  • American's aged 18-29 are motivated to buy and pay more for something based on its innovative design; cars (76%), furniture (60%), electronics (49%) and TVs (44%)
  • 55% of Americans believe that good design improves the functionality of any product (61% of 18-29 year olds)

The more we refine and explore ways to improve and expand the style, substance, form and function of our products and services, the more people will take notice and value the distinction between "good design" and "old habits" -- allowing your products or services gain attention and market.
